11/12/2008.- THE JURY WILL START WORKING
The deadline for the presentation of photographs has passed and the strenuous tasks of registering, coding and classifying all the material received has come to an end and, therefore, now the photographs will be handed to the Jury that will award the prizes for the 2008 edition. Based on the experience of previous editions, we know that many long sessions will be required before a final decision is made. In order for the said deliberations to take place in ideal conditions, a room at Net Computers has been prepared to view and discuss about the images; all the computer equipment has been correctly configured and there is a general projector and one monitor for each member of the jury.
On 07 January 2009 their decision will be made public. Now, we have to wait and wish all contestants good luck and a Merry Christmas.

01/09/2008.- TODAY STARTS THE 19th EDITION OF THE CONTEST
The Memorial Maria Luisa is, once again, with all mountain and nature photographers by calling for the nineteenth time its traditional annual event.

As it was the case last year, digital and analogical (slides) photographs will be accepted but, on this occasion, the organisation and sponsors have made a special effort and increased the value of the prizes, which will total over 6,000 euros. Furthermore, apart from the traditional prizes, and based upon photographers' requests, a specific award for the nature photography has been created: the "Planet Earth 2008" award. This prize will be given to the best photograph that displays any of the most singular and representative natural areas on the Planet, either from a landscape point of view or depicting flora, fauna or the behaviour of animals.

From now on we greet, as each year, the photographers who usually join us, while we welcome the new contestants who, we are sure, will come to this new competition. To everybody… Good lights!

 15/05/2008.- WILD WONDERS OF EUROPE
Wild Wonders of Europe is the major nature photographic project ever undertaken in Europe. Over a period of 14 months, a number of photographers will visit the 90 nature destinations selected in 44 countries as the most singular or representative of their natural environment in order to prepare a collection of over 11,000 images with a view to displaying, in a number of ways, European natural heritage. Fifty-five of the best professional European nature photographers have been selected to perform this task.

This Memorial is happy to find that several former participants in this contest are among the selected photographers, including Erlend Haarberg, from Norway and Orsolya Haarberg, from Hungary, who were awarded prizes in the 2007 edition, and Cornelia Doerr, from Germany, who won the 2002 edition. We are sure they will be extremely successful and we are looking forward to their impacting images. We are also sure that we shall continue to share photography and nature with them in a new edition of this contest which will begin on September 1st, 2008. Congratulations to all...!
17/02/2008.- THE 2007 COMPETITION HAS COME TO AN END
The deafening and everlasting applause heard at the Cajastur Culture Centre in Oviedo at 21:50 hours yesterday put the closing touch to the XVIII competition (2007) of the Memorial Maria Luisa.

The award giving ceremony this year has been the longest ever held to date. The truth is that it had really begun at midday on Friday when the first of the award winners, the Belgian Fons van den Heuvel, arrived at Asturias airport and ended, this morning when we said farewell to the Pole, Jerzy Grzesiak, at the same place.

It was an event where words and images share the stage. The words referred to the conference “A World of Ice”, where the geographer, Eduardo Martínez de Pisón, gave an excellent overview, to the audience that had filled the centre, on the history and on the present situation of the frozen regions of the Earth, alerting about the alarming rate at which they are disappearing.

Then, it was the turn for the winning images. As each image was displayed, the authors, who were present at the event, provided comments on them and received the prizes from the authorities.

The traditional audiovisual presentation, in digital format this year, with an epilogue on the International Polar Year, closed the ceremony.

We will meet once again on the first of September at a new competition.

04/01/2008.- We now have winners for the XVIII 2007 edition!
After long and hard-working days, the Jury in charge of judging the photographs presented to the XVIII edition of this Memorial has issued its judgment within the deadlines established. It is always difficult to judge the artistic work of third parties, more so on this occasion when the number of high-quality pictures entered could be counted in the hundreds.

On another level, two milestones have influenced the present edition: the extensive use of digital means among mountain and nature photographers and the extraordinary success of the initiative for the special award based on the International Polar Year.
In any case, this is not the time to dwell on the past or on the future; it is the time to enjoy the images and congratulate the winners.
