Lastest News: The 28th edition of the Maria Luisa Photo Memorial will begin on 1st September.
11/12/2007.- THE ADMISSION PERIOD FOR PHOTOGRAPHS HAS CLOSED
In accordance with the regulations governing the competition, the photograph admission period for the present 2007 edition ended yesterday. The response to the invitation launched by the Memorial at the beginning of last September for mountain and nature photographs has been excellent.

Participation has become even more universal than usual and the works presented cover the entire range of themes seen in preceding editions, although, on this occasion, we must highlight photographs that display glaciers and snow covered areas - the theme of the special prize called on occasion of the International Polar Year.

As soon as the registration and classification phase ends, the photographs received will be passed on to the panel of judges, who will make their decision public next January 4th, 2008.

For now we have to wait, although we are sure that on the said date we will all be enjoying an exhibition of spectacular images.

Good luck to all participants and Merry Christmas to them and to all other mountain and nature enthusiasts.

31/08/2007.- FROM TODAY THE XVIII EDITION OF THE CONTEST IS OPEN
Once again, the first of September triggers the opening of another edition, the eighteenth, of the Memorial Maria Luisa mountain and nature photographic contest. We would like to invite all nature photographers to this traditional contest.

Perhaps, being eighteen the age of majority, this edition will not be simply one more in the history of the contest. This year, it will feature two significant events. First, the contest will now be opening up to the digital world given the significance of new technologies and the requests received from participating photographers and from some who have not yet taken part. Secondly, this year being the International Polar Year, the Memorial will grant, in this edition and as an extraordinary event, a special award for the image that best displays glacial areas and snow-covered surfaces of the Planet. This is also a way of attracting attention to present environmental concerns and to global warming and of encouraging awareness of the damaging consequences this may lead to, especially concerning landscapes and mountain environments, the main features of this contest.

On the other hand, we will continue to offer all the traditional awards and also, given the success of last year's edition, a prize for new contestants under the age of twenty.

The publication of the book-portfolio Los senderos de la luz, towards the end of the last edition marked the end of an era for the Memorial Maria Luisa as it was the end of seventeen years during which slides were the only means accepted in the contest; now they will have to co-exist with digital photographs.

Regardless of the system each photographer decides to use, we wish them all the best of luck in this new edition that is now commencing and we are sure they will provide us, as they have always done, with the best of their work. If this is so, and regardless of the final results of this edition, we will have achieved our objective.

10/08/2007.- The XVIII Edition of the Contest is about to begin
As has now become a tradition, September 1st is the date when a new edition of the Memorial Maria Luisa mountain photograph contest will begin; the eighteenth edition.

This new edition will be special, distinguished by two significant events. The first is the opening of the contest to the digital world. After seventeen years of only accepting slides, we will now, for the first time, accept digital files also. On the other hand, a unique special award will be granted to the best image representing glacial areas or snow covered surfaces on the planet. This is meant as a tribute to the present International Polar Year.

Prepare your best slides and digital photographs and start sending them in from the first of September.
03/03/2007.- ALONG THE PATH OF THE LIGHT
All paths led to Oviedo last Saturday. All roads went down to Cajastur Auditorium at eight p.m. Once again the Maria Luisa Memorial took place there. This is the 27th time this prize has been awarded.

All paths led to Oviedo last Saturday. All roads went down to Cajastur Auditorium at eight p.m. Once again the Maria Luisa Memorial took place there. This is the 27th time this prize has been awarded.

Many guests were brought together there; the place filled up with friends who enjoyed mountains, nature and photography and they all warmly welcomed the prizewinners who had just arrived from Italy, Madrid, the Basque Country and from some different places in Asturias.

The prize-giving ceremony was chaired by the Regional Minister of Culture Ms. Ana Rosa Migoya, as well as by Chief of Social and Cultural Work of Cajastur, Mr. José Vega. They had previously held a reception party for both organizers and prizewinners, which proves a full support from the institutions to the Memorial.

Mr. Pedro Alvarez conducted the event. The madrilenian photographer, Angel Pablo Corral spoke on behalf of the prizewinners he also spoke about his personal experience as a participant in the Memorial himself and as the author of some of the images that have been published in the book “The paths of the light”. Naturally, words gave way to images, lights went off and the film showed the best slides in this 27th edition.

The star of the night was, of course, our first publication “The paths of the light” that showed one hundred eighty three best images in the history of Maria Luisa Memorial.
Last Saturday all paths led to Oviedo.

Congratulations to all prizewinners and thanks a lot to all of you who supported us. We hope we can keep counting on you and we are looking forward to seeing you at the 18th edition of the Maria Luisa Memorial.

05/01/2007.- The New Prizes and Prize Winners are here.

"Dentro de la Montaña II", Cesare Mangiagalli.
The jury has finished deliberating and has chosen the winners of the 2006 competition – the 17th time that it has been held. This time destiny has chosen the speleologist and photographer Cesare Mangiagalli as the overall winner, with a photograph taken in Zermatt in the Swiss Alps, and the best newcomer, Francesco Rizzato, both of whom are Italian. The special prize for climbing on the other hand has gone to the Basque photographer Gotzon Arribas Amestoy. However, the technical and artistic quality of the photographs in more important than the nationality of the photographers, and this quality is clear from even a brief glance at the work entered for the competition and, in particular, the prize winning images. And so, congratulations to everyone who entered the competition.
