11/12/2004.- Quantity and Quality in the presentation period for XV-2004
Yesterday, the period for the presentation of slides for the 2004 edition of our Competition ended. The response to this announcement, which took place at the beginning of September inviting all photographers of mountain activities and nature, couldn’t have been better concerning both the number of slides and their quality.

Approximately one thousand slides of extremely high technical and artistic level have been presented to the competition comprising images of landscapes, fauna and flora, as well as mountaineering and specific subjects in relation to rock climbing, which will be awarded a special prize this year.

Photographers from Europe, Africa and Asia are competing in this special edition dedicated to the first centenary of the ascension to the Naranjo de Bulnes. Some participants come from places that have never taken part in this event, such as Holland, raising the number of countries that have taken part in the Competition to forty-two.

From this moment onwards, the works presented are at the disposal of the jury who, after deliberating, will publish their results, as established in the competition’s regulations, next January 7th, 2005.

The organisation would like to wish all our participant luck and, our jury, patience, knowledge and wisdom in their difficult task.

01/09/2004.- The XV Edition - 2004 of the Competition is about to begin
Just when the celebrations of the centenary of the first ascent to Picu Urriellu or Naranjo de Bulnes are reaching their climax, the XV edition - 2004 of this competition is about to begin.

Mountain and nature photographers are invited once again to the annual event organised by the Memorial Maria Luisa. An appointment that excludes nobody; any person who has any type of relationship with mountains, their environments or sports can participate in the competition, the only condition is that they provide slides to display their experiences.

Therefore, landscape photographers, mountaineers, nature enthusiasts, trekkers, etc. may present their photographs to this competition, where they will be compared with the rest, without any cost for participation and with the commitment by the organisation that all the images received, even those that are awarded prizes, will be returned to their authors; apart from competing for an important prize and public recognition as the possible winner of the present 2004 edition of this competition.

Furthermore, on this occasion, climbers will have a special area reserved for them. A special prize has been established for images on climbing and verticality.

In the 2004 - Edition, Rules and Participation File section of this web site, you will find all the information you require to take part in this competition. However, if you should have any query or suggestion, you may send us an e-mail message to: info@memorialmarialuisa.com and we shall answer you as soon as possible.

The invitation has been extended.

We are looking forward to your response in the shape of images on nature, mountains and climbing.
08/07/2004.- 15th Edition - 2004 on the Centenary of the first ascent of the Naranjo de Bulnes.
September has arrived, bringing a new edition of our mountain and nature slides Contest.

Over the past few years, the María Luis Memorial has become part of the important events that surround the mountain world. The first Memorial took place in 2002 when the special "Mountain People" award was created, on occasion of the UN'S declaration of the International Year of Mountains. Last year's edition, of course, focused on Mount Everest. It could hardly be otherwise, since the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Mount Everest was celebrated in 2003 on practically every level. The Memorial's contribution to the fiftieth anniversary was a special award with mountaineering as the central theme.

This year, a different mountain, geographically much closer to us, centers the attention of mountaineers from all over the world. On 5 August 1904, Pedro Pidal and Gregorio Pérez, alias El Cainejo, were the first to reach the summit of the "Picu Urriellu" or Naranjo de Bulnes, the most emblematic mountain of Asturias. That exploit was to mark the beginning of mountaineering in Spain. On this occasion, the María Luisa Memorial will once again contribute towards the centenary celebrations by granting a singular award. This year the theme will be rock climbing, the world of verticality, and Big Wall climbing.

Once again we offer the participants in this 2004 edition of the Contest two main awards: The traditional award, with mountains and nature as the general theme, and a special award, with climbing, big walls, and mountain climbers as subject matter.
We encourage you to enter the world of mountaineering, nature, and photography that the Maria Luisa Memorial represents.

 09/01/2004.- Memorial Maria Luisa Awards
The New Year, 2004, has already arrived and with it the organisation of Memorial María Luisa is announcing, as is usual, the results of the latest edition of the competition. A date that is the last opportunity for photographers from all over the world to win such an important award as the Memorial María Luisa for slides of mountain views.

Each edition is a world of its own that has no connection with any of the previous editions and, surely, will have little connection with future editions. This XIV edition is no different in this sense.

The jury was ready for lengthy deliberations because, as in the past edition, they had to select two prizes. But the surprise arose when the slide admission period was reaching its end. At that moment the organisation of the Competition informed the jury that, in this edition, apart from the mountain and alpine topics excellent images of all type of topics concerning mountain issues were to be admitted: landscape, flora, fauna, antique photographs, ice and rock climbing, para-gliding, pot-holing, etc. Therefore, the organisation asked the jury to plan the deliberation period with sufficient time so that, if they considered appropriate, consolation prizes could be awarded as well as special mentions for slides that, in accordance with their criteria, deserved such recognition.

And so it happened. One week before what is customary, the jury began a task that, although habitual, is nonetheless complex.

Award to the loyal competitor

In this XIV edition, Memorial María Luisa has introduced something that mountaineers are used to. A short stop on the route. Perhaps, just enough time to take a few minutes and be able to observe the route already covered in the XIII previous editions and, on the other hand, the long and unknown route that still leads to an unfamiliar summit. A necessary stop to reflect on how we have reached the point where we are and make sure that the route taken is the correct one on this adventure to which the organisers have dedicated fourteen years, with no other intention than to try to preserve the memory of their friend María Luisa beyond the limits of life itself.

As a consequence of this reflection, the organisation wishes to acknowledge the real protagonists of the competition: the competitors themselves. Without them, nothing would be possible. Year after year they trust their "little treasures" to the competition. Some do so to win the first prize. Others, only to take part, "because it is there", because they have understood the message of such a singular Competition.

Therefore, the organisation, as an extraordinary event in this XIV Edition, wishes to pay homage to this type of photographer. To all those who, having taken part year after year, for the fourteen editions without missing any of them and who have never won an award. For those that know that they will probably never win the first prize and those who will find it difficult to even achieve a special mention, but even so, take part year after year.

For this award, the jury has not had to work at all, the task has been performed by the organisation of the competition directly. First of all, we had to select from our data base, all the possible competitors who, having taken part in the fourteen editions, had not won any award, special mention or consolation prize and that none of their slides had been finalists. The task was easy, as this consultation only provided one participant.

The prize-giving ceremony will be held next Friday, 13 February 2004, at the Centro Cultural Cajastur in Oviedo at 8 o'clock in the evening. As is usual, once the prizes have been given, there will be a projection of a selection of all the slides presented for this edition. Entrance is free and all those who come will receive a copy of "Grandes Espacios" the official magazine of Memorial María Luisa.
